Not intuitive

3
Reviewer: Anonymous , Houston TX Date: February 15, 2010
My company purchased this item. I did not get to read the instructions on how to use this item. I have used several other brands of electronic wind meter and can say that this is not one that is intuitive in its use. Other wind meters I have used do not require two (unlabeled) buttons to change display functions. If given this wind meter without the instruction book it could take a user a significant amount of time to figure out how to switch between, AVG, MPH, KTS and peak wind speeds. Furthermore not knowing to push and hold the center button to turn it off will result in the unit being just left on resulting in the battery running flat. I did find the instructions online so now I know how to use it. the only problem now is I can't use it because the impeller blew to pieces a couple weeks ago in 40kt winds. It is now useless and the replacement impeller costs $20. Kinda steep, and I don't have the receipt for it (and asking accounting or whoever purchased it would not be easy in this company). There are cheaper (half price) anemometers out there that are more functional. I will call customer service to see if they will send me a replacement impeller without a receipt. The unit is only 5 months old. I give it two stars because its a nice size and the case and lanyard are a good design feature, and the numbers are big on the display. I just called the customer service Department, I spoke to a person there who was very polite, informative and helpful. I had to add another star because of the good customer service. I used the online chat and they gave me the number to call Kellerman who makes Kestrel anemometers.

Kestrel 1000 wind meter - Simple yet effective

Reviewer: Fred , New Orleans, La Date: November 15, 2008
Kestrel 1000 wind meter provides accurate readings up to 110MPH. Much higher than that for more than a few seconds and the impeller loses it's blades. It was purchased to assist with a science project regarding wind speed and roof removal and did it's job perfectly.

Great Product for R/C Plane Flyers

Like another reviewer, I fly radio controlled airplanes but in Houston. We can always count on wind and everyone argues how strong it is. Now we will know for sure. Glad I ordered from this site. I ordered it on a Saturday and it shipped first thing Monday morning and was at my door at 10:30 AM Wednesday. It was packed very well and can't beat the shipping (free)

An excellent product. I wanted to be able to measure wind speed at over 5000 ft altitude in New Mexico. This product works! It's good to see something that works as well as advertised.

I got the kestrel 1000 as a gift for my husband. He likes how he can tell the wind speed at all times and that it's very portable.

Sirs,

I purchased your meter for use with my job as crane operator the wind speed is a vital component in lift planning, with boom lenths approaching 425 feet effective wind load is critical your meter has proven to be reliable in weather extremes with temps here over 115'it has never failed to produce, the only thing that i would change is the hard case scratches the readout window [easy fix] bill delahunte

Kestrel 1000

Reviewer: Phil Hopkins , Inverness, Fl. Date: July 22, 2006
This has to be the handiest "gadget" on the market. Superbly accurate, easy to operate, light weight yet extremely sturdy in construction. Here in Florida I expect to use it more that the average consumer might, but with full confidence of it's performance.

SO SIMPLE AND NEAT

Reviewer: Tom Polk , Farmington Hills MI Date: July 21, 2006
I fly model planes and checking the wind is important. The Kestrel 1000 is a very basic and reliable device that continues to attract positive attention wherever I use it. We've compared it favorably to other brands costing far more. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a quick, convenient and reliable read on the wind.
