The Kestrel 4000 Pocket Weather Meter is the baseline wind and weather meter in the Kestrel 4000 series. What sets the 4000 series apart from the rest of the Kestrel family is that these high tech weather meters have the capability to store up to 2000 points of weather data, enabling you to track changes in the environment over time. This unique function opens up an entirely new realm of weather tracking capabilities for Kestrel Meter users.

The Kestrel 4000 Pocket Weather Meter is the first in the next generation of Kestrel Meters. It has all the wind and weather monitoring functions available with the Kestrel 3500 Wind Meter, plus the distinct advantage of data storage, graphing functions, and computer interface technology. With these additional options you will be able to record changes in the weather over time, view these changes as graphs on your Kestrel 4000's display, and even upload the data to your PC or Mac with the Kestrel Interface. The Kestrel 4000 series is now available with Bluetooth Technology, which allows you to communicate with your Kestrel at a range of up to 30-feet, and maximize the battery life of your weather meter.

  • Each Bluetooth Meter includes custom communication software designed to quickly and easily configure your data transmission frequency, download logged data, graph data and transfer data to other applications. It is no longer necessary to purchase an interface separately, the new Kestrel Meters with Bluetooth include the software necessary to communicate wirelessly.
  • For military professionals, the Olive Drab NV version of the Kestrel 4000 features a night-vision preserving backlight. Backlight incorporates optical filter to reduce overall brightness and minimize blue and green spectrum light to preserve night vision.  (Note:  This backlight appears soft greyish pink, not "red", and is still in the visible spectrum, so is not compatible with night-vision equipment.)

The advantage the Kestrel 4000 provides to scientists, athletes, firefighters, automotive technicians, and agricultural specialists is immeasurable. With Kestrel 4000 technology, you will not only know the current weather conditions, but be able to track changes in the environment and therefore make predictions as to what may happen next.

The Kestrel 4000 accurately measures:

  • Wind Chill
  • Air, Water, and Snow Temperature
    • Displayed in Fahrenheit or Celsius w/ accuracy of +/-1°
  • Current, Average, and Maximum Wind Speed
    • Wind Speeds displayed in: Beaufort Wind Scale; Knots; MPH; KPH; or Feet Per Minute
  • Barometric Pressure
  • Pressure Trend
  • Altitude
  • Relative Humidity
  • Dewpoint Temperature
  • Wet Bulb Temperature

In addition, the Kestrel 4000 offers:

  • Density Altitude

amazing little machine

Reviewer: Anonymous , barnegat n.j. Date: November 03, 2009
Many years ago , while attending college I got hooked on the science of meteorology. I own the Kestrel 4000, also the interface, and the weather vane mount. I have it out every night, and keep notes on every event taking place on my deck. Great machine, I love it!

If you want a good meter, buy this

5
Reviewer: Dustin N. , Lake Mary, FL Date: August 14, 2008
I researched online for the best, most durable handheld anemometer...for the price, and the Kestrel 4000 fit the criteria. Every single function works EXACTLY how they say it will. The only problem you might run into is the altitude. It's accurate in the way it measures it. But since it calculates it from the pressure, 1 day it will show the right altitude and the next it will say -7ft. So if your oing to buy this for the altitude and need very accurate results, get a GBS! But everything else works great. It is very durable and rugged and it's almost impossible to damage it. If your going to purchase this meter, you MUST buy the computer interface (Serial Port or USB Port); it makes your meter 5 times more interesting if you can hook it up to the comuputer. And if you want a good program: Virtual Weather Station. I ran into one problem when I first hooked it up to the computer...On Virtual Weather Station there is a bug that if you click on the "Reset Humidity Calibration," it actually DE-CALIBRATES your humidity sensor and shows the RH at .2% Luckily Kestrel has such a good return policy and I got a free shipping label and sentit back to the factory and they recalibrated it for free and only took about 10 full days from the time I shipped it to recieved it. All in all I am very happy my Kestrel 4000NV and would recommend it to anybody who is a weather freak... :-) All the functions work great and are very easy to use. Don't listen to those other people that say it's too high-tech. hey're dumb. If you don't know how to press a button and read a few numbers then don't get this meter. haha.

4000+ with GPS?

4
Reviewer: Michael Scollay , NSW Australia Date: March 28, 2008
I've owned a Kestrel 4000 for nearly 4 years and it remains an almost perfect instrument that I've checked calibration from time to time against AWS's 100x the price. Exceptional. Except my wind-vane that is still noisy:-( Now one of my desires is to combine the portable weather meter feature with a GPS! An awkward way is via the serial interface, PDA and GPS. But I reckon it's time the two features were clubbed together with Bluetooth added for remote access.

IAQ Investigations

Reviewer: Anonymous , Germantown, MD Date: January 25, 2008
I have used the Kestral 4000 for nearly three years performing many indoor air quality studies along with using several $2,500 professional IAQ data loggers (logging temp, RH, CO and CO2), which must be returned to the manufacturer annually for calibration checks. This small Kestrel instrument has maintained temperature and RH within +/- 2-F and +/- 2% RH of both returned IAQ meter instruments over all this time. This small instrument is one of the most dependable multi-use pieces of equipment ever!

4000 for Fire Service

Reviewer: Anonymous , Terrell, TX Date: January 03, 2008
Since purchasing the Kestral 4000 we have used it for 2 HazMat incidents and several structure fires to support our rehab area and provide for the health and safety of our firefighters. It has performed flawlessly and has been one of the best purchases we made during 2007. I would recommend it to other depts.

Firefighter Rehab

Reviewer: Steve Howie , Terrell, TX Date: September 13, 2007
My organization uses the Kestrel 4000 for determining weather conditions for firefighters in wildland and structural situations. It has performed magnificently and has provided us with information that has and most assuredly will continue to save firefighters from climate related injuries and stress. The device's ability to calculate the humidity index and wet bulb readings has also helped greatly this summer. We have not used it in a winter setting, but if it performs as well as it has this summer it will be great.

Complete & Compact

5
Reviewer: Anonymous , Oregon Date: August 13, 2006
This meter was initially purchased for following weather during Wildland Fire operations. I'm afraid the old standard belt weather kit may find itself going the way of the dinosaurs. Every bit of information is available and easily accessed one-handed through the keypad. The user definable screens allow three conditions to be monitored at the same time without searching. The saved conditions allow trending for the next days, greatly improving the ability to plan for work periods and safe operations. It is light- weight and compact yet very durable. It has resisted sand, heat, and mild impact well. I have yet to test the water resistance ability. I also use it during competive shooting/reloading. It allows for monitoring of the exact conditions under which the physics of the bullet is fired. At long distance ranges this can mean the diffence of scoring or not. When you review the targets and think "why is this shooting session different than a previous one?" The Kestrel will let you know the atmospheric changes. Combine it with a good PDA and ballistic program and marksmanship can be greatly improved. The kestrel 4000 meter is hardy and will stand up to real life abuse. The battery usage is perfect. A new set of high quality cells will run 24 hours a day for a week. The only place I could see where improvement could be made is in the hinge and latch of the battery access door . This area was not finely "milled" on my unit. The latch release protrudes outside of the body of the unit and could be damaged if impacted or caught on something. Don't let this deter you from considering purchasing a Kestrel meter. This is the one to get! SAFETY FIRST!

Accurate and Reliable

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Philadelphia, PA Date: August 07, 2006
When I was looking at meters I had compared the Kestrel meter with two other weather devices. Though they all responded slowly to environmental changes the Kestrel meter was the most accurate to the true climate and the most reliable. As a result I picked the Kestrel meter and have been using it during data collection for my dissertation. Since then the meter has continued to work well. Just give it a little bit of time if you change climates quickly.
