Great LR Shootin Aid

This is a great peice of gear to use in conjunction with a handheld ballistic calculator. Real world data will bring you that much closer to first round hits. One tip I can give if your using this with a ballistic calculator is to trick your Kestrel into giving you STATION PRESSURE instead of barometric pressure. If your calculator will accept station pressure, you wont have to worry about altitude. To do this, set your elivation to 0 in the barometric reference window. Then set your barometric pressure to your local weather station's data in the altitude reference window. Your Kestrel will now give you station pressure, and you can forget about altitude.

Kestrel 4500 weather meter is a great little device, I used it for hunting and long range shooting. Extremely well made and appears very durable. Has all the bells and whistles, which I'm still trying to figure out!

I Have Concerns...

The plastic battery shim is a critical component to the calibration of the unit. This shim can easily be lost and my efforts to find extras have thus far been unsuccessful. (Online sites do not carry them and NK customer service initially promised to send me a couple of extras but I am still waiting after two weeks.) Some of the buttons on the unit sometimes require multiple key presses for input to be recognized. (Is this normal or a sign of trouble?) Also, the battery door seems flimsy (especially the catch) and I do not know how it will stand up to multiple battery replacements. Because of these issues, I wonder about the overall durability of the unit. In addition, I have the USB interface but note that the connection to the cradle is actually via a serial port. This interface is only USB on the PC connection. As a result, downloading data to the PC is extremely s-l-o-w.

Pacific Northwest

I used the Kestrel 4500 on a distance learning trip to the Pacific Northwest. My 4th,5th and 6th grade students used the info. I collected there to compare it to local weather back in Florida. I found the Kestrel easy to read, and the tripod and wind vane were easy to set up. I took readings at Mt. Rainier, Mount St. Helens and Olympic National Parks-and points in between. It was fantastic! If you love weather then this is the tool for you!

If you're looking for a small handheld weather station this is it, I love the backlight and the different screens of information..Well worth every penny.This is a hobby device for me but it allows me to carry it anyway and find out what the current weather information is.

Kilimanjaro

I purchased the Kestrel as an added component on a recent climb of Mt. Kilimanjo. 12 of us did the 6-day Machame Route trek and I thought it would be interesting to track the weather/altitude changes along the way. Our group found this level of detail to be extremely interesting as everyone wanted to know information to enter in their individual logbooks. In particular, knowing the overnight temperatures outside the tents was a contant point of discussion. I need to get a tripod, vane and interface for our next trek.

Great for Tactical Long Range

Only took a minute to calibrate and it was ready. Once on the range, it helped with all the variables associated with long range shooting. This is especially helpful with reloading ammunition and test firing in different environments. The night vision backlight works great with any NV sight, and if used without a NV sighting device, the subtle backlight doesnt interfere with low light visual aids.
